Art has the power to transcend time and space, allowing us to glimpse into the depths of the human experience both past, future and present. Roly Hermans, is a Kapiti based painter who creates work that is inspired by the artwork that graced the boxes of the plastic model kitsets he used to buy as a child. He still makes models, and brings his modelling skills into his paintings, applying his love of detail and accuracy.
Although he has always had an interest in art, he never found the time until he retired from ‘real work’ in 2022. Roly is passionate about his new creative endeavour but is also very considerate about what projects he moves onto next.
Exploring Roly Hermans' Artistic Style
Roly Hermans is a Paraparaumu based painter who takes pride in the research and accuracy of his paintings. He started with landscapes; however, it was painting the man-made objects within these scenes that really captivated Roly, especially vintage aircraft, ships, and trains. So, now he specialises in ‘heritage transport’ art.
He uses acrylics as his primary medium, but Roly also uses specialised liquid washes for intricate details – a technique he picked up from his model-making hobby.
Showcasing Roly Hermans' Captivating Works
Several of Roly’s works have been accepted for exhibitions at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington and the Toi Mahara Gallery in Waikanae, and he will be taking part in this year’s Kapiti Coast Art Trail.
